Burnet High School Esprit de Corps moved from fourth place in preliminary round to second in the Zone D walking competition final in Pflugerville on Saturday, October 30, to lock in a return trip to state competition .
“(The) students were thrilled. We knew that when entering a region, going state is never a sure thing, ”said group director Drew Hicks. “Everyone in the zone is good, and it was our mindset to be memorable and to have a performance that we were proud of. Hearing the announcement that we were second overall and qualified for the state marching band championship was a real rush. And we are so proud of our students.
Burnet’s contest show “November Rain” is suitable as the band’s season kicks off in November.
L’Esprit de Corps, which consists of the Highlandette Marching Band and Dance Team, will compete in the College Interschool League State Marching Championships on Wednesday, November 10 at the Alamodome, 100 Montana St. in San Antonio. L’Esprit de Corps performed at 9.45am during the preliminary round of competition 4A.
Of the 26 groups in the preliminary round, 10 advance to the final, which begins at 7 p.m. the same day at the Alamodome.
This is the second consecutive participation of the Esprit de Corps at the state championships. Last year, the ensemble finished third in the state. Typically, UIL alternates state marching contests with Groups 1A, 3A and 5A advancing odd years and 2A, 4A and 6A advancing even years. But due to the COVID-19 pandemic last year, UIL decided to allow all classes to hold state championships this year.
Competitions 1A, 3A and 5A take place Monday to Wednesday, November 1 to 3; competitions 2A, 4A and 6A take place Monday to Wednesday, November 8-10.
Tickets for the state marching band competition cost $ 20 for the preliminaries and $ 20 for the finals. Or, people can buy a combined preliminary / final ticket for $ 35. Additional Ticketmaster fees apply.
Tickets are available online or at the Alamodome ticket office. The Alamodome has a transparent bag policy. Additional parking fees at the Alamodome are $ 15, cash only. The spectator parking will be in lot B; infinity parking is available off-site.
The Burnet Esprit de Corps entered the season as a young group with many underclassmen making up the group. Their youth did not hold them back.
“We were very confident about our performance heading into our preliminary round performance on Saturday (in the zone),” said Hicks. “The level of preparation of the students prepared them for a good race. “
At the end of the preliminary round, the Esprit de Corps came fourth out of 30 teams, giving them a place in the final.
The wait was long between the preliminary performance at 9.45 a.m. and the final performance at 9.45 p.m. The whole group was able to rest, even returning to Burnet high school.
Entering the state competition, members of Esprit de Corps know what awaits them.
“The biggest takeaway from the region is that we know we’re heading into some really tough competition to enter the state,” Hicks said. “With each level of advancement, the overall level of field excellence of each group improves exponentially. Every group we compete with will be excellent. It’s our job to be as precise and clean as possible for our performance in state preliminaries.
The leaders of Esprit de Corps do not envision a change from here to state.
“We’re going to continue to rehearse and prepare as we normally do in preparation for the state,” Hicks added. “We believe in consistency and relentlessly devote ourselves to our fundamentals. ”
